Rent & Housing
Rent is the biggest expense in Vienna, but it's still very affordable compared to other European capitals like London, Paris, or Zurich. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs €700-1,000/month, while outside the center you can find quality apartments for €500-750/month.
Vienna has an extensive social housing system (Gemeindewohnung) that offers subsidized apartments at €5-8 per square meter. As a working nurse, you may qualify for these after registering your residence (Meldezettel) — though waiting lists can be 1-2 years.
Groceries & Food
Monthly grocery costs for one person average €250-350. Austria has excellent supermarket options: Hofer (Aldi's Austrian brand) and Lidl for budget shopping, Billa and Spar for mid-range, and Merkur for premium products. Most supermarkets also carry international food products.
Eating out is moderately priced: a lunch menu at a restaurant costs €8-12, a dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant runs €40-60, and a kebab or pizza averages €5-8.
Transportation
Vienna has one of the best public transport systems in Europe, and it's incredibly affordable. An annual pass (Jahreskarte) costs just €365 — exactly €1 per day — giving you unlimited access to the U-Bahn, trams, and buses.
You genuinely don't need a car in Vienna. The public transport network runs frequently and reaches virtually every corner of the city. This saves you thousands compared to car ownership.
Healthcare
Healthcare costs are minimal for employed nurses. Your social insurance contributions (deducted from salary) cover comprehensive health insurance. Doctor visits, hospital stays, and most medications are covered. You'll pay a small prescription fee of €7 per medication.
Dental care is partially covered — basic treatments are free through public insurance, but cosmetic procedures require private payment or supplemental insurance.
Monthly Budget Example
Here's a realistic monthly budget for a single nurse in Vienna: Rent €650, Groceries €300, Transport €30 (annual pass), Phone & Internet €30, Utilities €100, Health insurance (from salary), Entertainment €100, Savings €200+. Total: approximately €1,400-1,500/month for comfortable living.
This leaves room for saving €500-700+ per month from a typical nursing salary — enough to send remittances home, save for the future, or enjoy Austria's culture and travel opportunities.
