Nurse Salary in Austria 2026: What You Can Really Expect

Base Salary Overview

Nursing salaries in Austria are regulated by collective agreements (Kollektivvertrag), which means your pay is transparent and standardized. As of 2026, a registered nurse (Diplomierte Gesundheits- und Krankenpfleger/in) earns a gross monthly salary of approximately €2,800 to €3,500 depending on experience and location.

Entry-level nurses with recognized qualifications typically start at around €2,800 gross per month (14 times per year, as Austria pays a 13th and 14th month salary). With 5+ years of experience, salaries increase to €3,200-3,500 per month.

The 13th and 14th Month Salary

One of the biggest financial advantages of working in Austria is the legally mandated 13th and 14th month salary. This means you effectively receive 14 monthly payments per year — the extra payments come in June (Urlaubsgeld) and November (Weihnachtsgeld). These are taxed at a favorable flat rate of approximately 6%, making them significantly more valuable than regular monthly pay.

For a nurse earning €3,000/month gross, this means an additional €6,000 per year in bonus payments, taxed at the lower rate.

Night Shift & Weekend Bonuses

Working night shifts (Nachtdienst), weekends, and holidays comes with substantial additional pay. Night shift premiums typically add €3-8 per hour on top of your base rate. Sunday and holiday work is compensated at 100% premium (double pay). Over a month with regular night shifts, these bonuses can add €400-800 to your gross salary.

Many nurses strategically take on night and weekend shifts during their first years to maximize savings, especially while still single or before their family joins them in Austria.

Salary by Region

Vienna tends to offer the highest base salaries but also has the highest cost of living. Salzburg and Tyrol offer competitive pay with slightly lower rent. Lower Austria and Burgenland may offer slightly lower base salaries but significantly cheaper housing, resulting in higher disposable income.

A nurse in Vienna might earn €3,300/month but pay €900 in rent, while a nurse in Linz earning €3,100/month might pay only €600 for a similar apartment — netting more savings.

Net Take-Home Pay

After taxes and social insurance contributions (approximately 35-40% of gross salary), a nurse earning €3,200 gross takes home approximately €2,100-2,200 net per month. This is significantly higher than nursing salaries in most source countries, and when combined with Austria's excellent public services (free healthcare, subsidized childcare, public transport), the effective purchasing power is very strong.

Additionally, nurses with children receive Familienbeihilfe (family allowance) of €120-170 per child per month, further boosting household income.
