Austria Family Reunification 2026: Requirements, Income and Application

There Is No Single Austrian ‘Family Visa’
People commonly search for an Austria family reunification visa, but stays longer than six months are normally handled through a residence title whose name and rights depend on the sponsor. A short-stay visa, a Red-White-Red Card plus, a Family Member title, a settlement permit and an EU-law residence card are not interchangeable. Start with the sponsor’s nationality and exact Austrian status before preparing documents or booking an appointment.
Who Counts as a Family Member Under the Main National Route
Under the Settlement and Residence Act definition used for the main third-country reunification routes, family members are spouses, registered partners and unmarried minor children, including adopted and stepchildren. Spouses and registered partners must be at least 21 when applying. Parents, long-term partners and other relatives may fall under different dependant provisions with additional conditions; they should not assume that the standard spouse-and-child route applies.
The Sponsor Determines the Residence Title and Work Rights
Family members of Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card holders and several other settled third-country sponsors generally receive a Red-White-Red Card plus if all conditions are met. Family members of Austrian citizens generally receive the Family Member title. Both provide unrestricted labour-market access. Other settlement titles may permit only self-employment or no work, and some categories are quota-limited. Families of RWR Card, EU Blue Card, Austrian and researcher sponsors are generally outside the family quota.
Income Requirements for Family Reunification in 2026
The official 2026 reference rates are €1,308.39 for a single person, €2,064.12 for a married couple and an additional €201.88 for each child. These figures are not a simple gross-salary promise: the authority applies the statutory maintenance calculation and considers regular costs. Amounts must generally remain available after relevant monthly costs, such as rent or loan instalments, insofar as those costs exceed the 2026 room-and-board allowance of €386.43. Obtain an individual calculation before relying on a borderline income.
Housing, Insurance and Relationship Evidence
Applicants normally need a legal right to accommodation suitable for the family size and health insurance covering all risks with benefits in Austria. Co-insurance through the sponsor may be available in common RWR Card, EU Blue Card and Austrian-citizen cases, but it should be documented rather than assumed. Prepare passports, current photographs, marriage, partnership, birth or adoption documents, the sponsor’s residence evidence, income records, lease documentation and any required translations or legalisation.
A1 German Before Immigration—and Important Exceptions
A1 German is generally required on the first application for titles including Red-White-Red Card plus, Family Member and several settlement permits. The official portal accepts recognised evidence from ÖSD, Goethe-Institut, telc and ÖIF, and the certificate must normally be no more than one year old when submitted. Exceptions include children under 14, specified health cases and certain families of Very Highly Qualified RWR Card, EU Blue Card and researcher sponsors. Check the exact exception rather than assuming the sponsor’s permit always waives A1.
Where to Apply, Processing and the Risk of Overstaying
First applications are generally filed at the competent Austrian embassy or consulate abroad, which checks the file and forwards it to the Austrian residence authority. Certain applicants may file during lawful stay in Austria, but a domestic application usually does not extend the permitted visa-free or visa stay. The official portal states that the authority must decide without undue delay and no later than six months after receipt; incomplete evidence can still slow the case. The listed application fee is €218, which should be rechecked before filing.
After Approval: Validity, Integration and Long-Term Planning
Residence titles are generally issued for twelve months, though sponsor validity can shorten a family member’s card. A Red-White-Red Card plus or Family Member title may be issued for three years after two years of uninterrupted lawful residence when Module 1 is completed. After five years of continuous lawful settlement, Long-term Resident–EU may become possible if the general requirements and Integration Agreement Module 2 are met. Track passport expiry, renewal deadlines, address registration and language milestones from the first day.
