Move to Austria

    Relocation route guide

    How to Move to Austria

The right first step depends on why you are moving and which passport you hold. Use this guide to separate immigration permission, professional recognition and the practical move.

Which route should you check first?

These are starting points, not eligibility decisions. The competent Austrian authority decides an application based on your evidence and current rules.

    EU, EEA or Swiss citizen

You generally use EU free-movement rules rather than a Red-White-Red Card. For a stay longer than three months, check the residence conditions and registration-certificate procedure. Regulated professions can still require professional recognition.

    Non-EU citizen seeking work

A Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card may be relevant, depending on the job, qualifications, salary and other criteria. The exact route matters: a job offer, points estimate or tourist entry does not by itself grant permission to live and work in Austria.

    Joining family in Austria

Your route depends on the sponsor's citizenship or residence title and your family relationship. Requirements can include income, insurance, accommodation and language evidence. Check the official family category before paying for translations or travel.

    Studying in Austria

Admission to a course and permission to reside are separate questions. Entry and residence rules depend on citizenship and length of stay. Use OeAD's student guidance and your institution's admission instructions; a student route is not automatically a full work permit.

Four decisions before you book a move

    1. 01

      Confirm your legal route

Start with citizenship, purpose of stay, planned duration and any real job offer. The same person can have different options when one of those facts changes.

    2. 02

      Check your profession

Healthcare and other regulated professions can require formal recognition before practice. An immigration permit and permission to practise are not the same decision.

    3. 03

      Build an evidence list

Use the current checklist for your exact permit. Depending on the route, expect identity, qualification, employment, family, insurance or financial evidence; translations and legalisation may also be needed.

    4. 04

      Plan arrival separately

Housing, local address registration, insurance and the first weeks of expenses deserve a plan of their own. Do not treat a permit application as your entire relocation plan.
