Meeting an employer and working a trial shift are different activities. Use a pre-travel checklist to avoid turning an interview trip into unauthorised employment.

An interview trip is not permission to start a job

The Austrian migration portal allows eligible visa-exempt applicants to look for employment during a lawful visa-free stay. That does not make visiting, submitting an application and performing work the same activity. A person who needs a visa should check the appropriate entry purpose with the Austrian representation before arranging an interview trip.

An invitation from HR is useful information for travel planning, not a work authorisation. Ask what the employer expects you to do during the visit. A conversation about your experience is different from covering a shift, handling orders or providing patient care. The distinction matters especially when an employer casually describes productive work as “just an interview”.

Before booking travel, ask whether the first stages can be remote

Request a video interview, written job description and salary discussion before paying for flights and accommodation. Confirm who will attend, the work location, interview duration and any travel reimbursement. If the employer cannot explain the role or your likely permit category remotely, an expensive visit will not necessarily make those questions easier to resolve.

Prepare a realistic interview schedule with time for travel and document checks. Keep an employer invitation and accurate contact details, but do not invent a holiday purpose if the real purpose requires clarification with the consulate. Also check your passport, existing Schengen travel history and the conditions of your own visa or visa-free entry. Another applicant’s entry experience is not a personalised border decision.

Watch for the interview becoming a trial shift

Arbeiterkammer explains that days on which you actually work are workdays that must be paid; simply looking around a business is different. Calling the activity a Schnuppertag does not settle its legal classification. Duties, integration into operations and instructions from the employer matter more than a friendly label.

Before a proposed trial, ask in writing whether you will perform productive tasks, follow a roster, deal with customers or replace an employee. Do not assume that agreeing to waive payment makes employment lawful. The labour-law question and the foreign-worker permission question need to be checked separately. If there is uncertainty, postpone the work component rather than treating it as a harmless favour.

Professional licensing can create a third gate

For a regulated role, suitable immigration permission is not the whole answer. A foreign nurse, for example, must also have the professional entitlement required for the actual duties. An employer’s observation day cannot be used to bypass recognition or registration by letting an unlicensed applicant perform clinical work.

Ask the employer to describe an assessment in safe terms: interview, discussion of a hypothetical case, facility tour or another clearly defined activity. Do not agree to patient-care duties because a colleague will “supervise everything”. Where an activity could be employment or regulated practice, obtain a competent answer before participating. Your willingness to demonstrate skill should not expose you or other people to avoidable risk.

Finding a job does not answer every stay question

Once an offer arrives, establish the exact residence and employment category, filing method and authority. In-country application rules and any effect on continued lawful stay are title-specific. Do not assume either that every application extends a visit or that every category follows the same rule. Confirm your own filing and stay position with the competent residence authority under the current rules.

Keep two dates in your planning file: the last day currently permitted by your entry conditions and the date on which you may lawfully begin the proposed work. Update them only with a reliable, case-specific basis. A submitted receipt, a recruiter’s message or an estimated approval week should not be treated as a substitute for checking those rights.

A useful message to send before the visit

You can ask: “I am travelling for recruitment discussions and do not yet have permission to start this employment. Please confirm that the visit consists of interviews and a non-working tour, describe any practical assessment, and explain the permit category proposed if an offer is made.” This is a planning template, not a legal determination about the proposed activity.

Also request the offer’s conditions, the contact coordinating immigration and the point at which the employer expects you to relocate. Preserve the reply. If expectations change after you arrive, stop and clarify rather than accepting work under pressure because you have already paid for the trip.

Frequently asked questions about interview visits

Can an unpaid day still be work? Yes, describing it as unpaid does not resolve what you actually do. Does an offer alone authorise a first shift? Not by itself. Can every non-EU applicant obtain the Austrian Job Seeker Visa? No, that is a particular route, not a generic interview visa. Does submitting a residence application settle professional licensing? No; those requirements remain separate.

If you are an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen or already have suitable Austrian work rights, your immigration analysis differs from that of an applicant visiting from abroad. Your labour rights and any professional requirements still deserve attention. Always explain your current status accurately when asking for advice.

Use a consultation before an expensive or ambiguous visit

A €99 Initial Assessment with Move to Austria can help organise your invitation, proposed activities, qualification evidence and questions about the planned work route. Bring the employer’s messages and your current entry or residence status. We cannot approve an entry purpose, extend a stay or authorise a trial shift.

Where a specific activity or a stay deadline is legally uncertain, the competent authority or an appropriately qualified legal adviser must resolve it. The value of preparation is knowing what to ask before travel—not collecting reassurances after a trial has already started. No job offer or Austrian approval is guaranteed by booking a consultation.
