There is no single published bank-balance shortcut. Learn how to prove funds, accommodation, insurance and the 70-point claim before applying.
The short answer: there is no universal published bank-balance figure
Austria's official Job Seeker Visa checklist asks for proof of adequate means of subsistence, but it does not give every applicant one fixed bank-balance number. A bank statement is one possible piece of evidence, not a magic threshold that guarantees approval. The official list also mentions payslips, pay certificates, employment contracts, insurance benefits, pensions, investment capital and other sufficient assets. What is persuasive depends on the source, accessibility and duration of your funds, your intended stay and the Austrian representation's assessment.
Be especially wary of websites that multiply a monthly number by six and call the result an official visa deposit. The general residence-permit income reference rates and the Job Seeker Visa document test are not interchangeable. Ask the competent Austrian embassy or consulate what financial evidence it expects for your circumstances, then submit a clear, consistent record rather than relying on an unsourced balance claim.
First check whether you qualify for this visa at all
The six-month Job Seeker Visa is for third-country nationals who can qualify as Very Highly Qualified Workers. The official minimum is 70 of 100 points. It is not the general route for every foreign applicant who wants to visit Austria and look for work. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens have different free-movement rules, and other third-country applicants may need a job offer for a different Red-White-Red Card category.
A self-assessment calculator can help you decide whether to investigate the route, but it cannot award points. The Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) reviews the evidence in the actual application. Before you buy travel or translation services, map every point you claim to the precise document that proves it and check the caps in each official points category.
Build a financial-evidence file an officer can follow
Start with a short cover sheet that identifies each source of support: current employment income, savings, pension or other eligible assets. Match it to recent statements or formal certificates showing your name, dates, currency and available amount. If you rely on a large recent transfer, be ready to explain and document its origin. If funds are held jointly, clarify your access to them. These are practical presentation steps, not extra statutory requirements or a promise that a particular document will be accepted.
Your file should make the intended six-month stay credible after travel, accommodation and everyday costs. Do not present a borrowed balance that will disappear immediately, a screenshot without account ownership, or projected earnings from an Austrian job you do not yet have. A clean explanation of stable, accessible funds is more useful than an impressive but unexplained number. Confirm whether the consulate needs originals, copies, translations or other formalities before the appointment.
Accommodation is a separate requirement
The official document leaflet asks for evidence of accommodation at least for arrival, and the federal migration page lists locally customary accommodation among Job Seeker Visa documents. This can be a lease, a preliminary tenancy agreement or other evidence acceptable to the authority. You do not have to pretend you already have a permanent flat before receiving a visa, but the address and dates in your evidence should fit your arrival plan.
A hotel booking, invitation or temporary rental may raise different questions from a signed lease. The responsible representation decides what satisfies its checklist. If you plan to relocate between cities for interviews, explain the first accommodation and realistic next steps. Do not commit to a non-refundable long lease merely to create paperwork before your eligibility and filing requirements are clear.
Health insurance must be usable in Austria
The federal Job Seeker Visa list requires health insurance covering all risks, through compulsory insurance or an equivalent policy. Its document leaflet gives comprehensive travel insurance as a possible example for this visa application. Check the coverage period, geographic scope, exclusions and certificate wording against your consulate's current instructions. An insurance quote or a policy that begins after your planned entry date is not the same as proof of coverage for the stay.
Do not confuse this visa-stage insurance question with the insurance standard for a later Austrian residence permit. A later Red-White-Red Card application may involve employment-based public insurance or another form of adequate cover. Your job-search plan should leave enough time to arrange the later stage without an uninsured gap.
Points evidence needs its own checklist
The official leaflet separates general visa documents from the records needed to substantiate points. Depending on the points claimed, you may need tertiary-degree and institution evidence, research publications or patents, senior-management salary proof, employment references with dates and duties, language certificates or Austrian study records. Do not submit every document you have collected; submit the records that support the categories you actually claim and make their connection explicit.
An employment confirmation that says only 'worked here' may fail to prove the relevant role or period. A degree without evidence about the institution may trigger a follow-up. Language certificates can have validity rules. Build a point-by-point index and check the official leaflet, current forms and consular instructions. The authority can request additional evidence, so allow time for clarification before the intended travel date.
Where to apply, translations and timing
The application is made through the competent Austrian embassy or consulate abroad. The federal document leaflet calls for originals and copies; documents not in German or English need translations into German or English, and certified versions can be requested. Local representations can add practical appointment and document instructions. The points assessment begins with a properly filed application, not with the online calculator.
Apply early enough to deal with missing evidence, but do not assume a processing guarantee. The six-month job-search period starts with the issued visa's validity, not with the day you started preparing papers. If you already have a binding job offer, compare the direct Red-White-Red Card route instead of paying for a job-search visa you may not need.
What happens after you find a job
The Job Seeker Visa permits the search, not employment by itself. If you receive a job offer matching your qualification while the visa is valid, you can apply for the Red-White-Red Card for Very Highly Qualified Workers. That is a second application with its own employer and job evidence; a successful visa does not pre-approve the residence card or a regulated profession.
If you do not obtain a suitable job, plan to leave when the visa expires. If a later application is still pending, the right to remain depends on the specific timing and filing circumstances, not on a general rule that an application extends any stay. Check the federal FAQ or the competent authority before making travel decisions. Never begin work based on an offer alone.
A realistic pre-application decision
Before filing, ask four questions: Can I document at least 70 points? Can I demonstrate accessible support for the proposed stay? Do I have acceptable accommodation and insurance evidence? Are there employers likely to offer work aligned with my qualification within six months? If the answer to the first question is uncertain, resolve it before building a costly travel plan.
