Who the Student Permit Covers
The temporary Residence Permit – Student is primarily for third-country nationals admitted to qualifying studies at an Austrian public university, university of applied sciences, accredited private university or teacher-training institution. Certain university courses must comprise at least 40 ECTS and may not be exclusively language instruction. Admission supports the application, but it does not itself create a right of residence.
Where and How to Apply
First applications are generally filed with the competent Austrian embassy or consulate abroad. Some people who may enter Austria visa-free can apply in Austria during lawful stay, but submitting domestically does not extend that lawful stay or guarantee approval. The Austrian authority decides the permit; if a visa is needed after approval, the representation handles the entry step. Apply early and follow the responsible office’s checklist.
2026 Funds, Insurance and Core Documents
The federal migration portal lists monthly student maintenance rates from 1 January 2026 of €722.58 for people under 24 and €1,308.39 for people aged 24 or older. Accommodation costs still affect the subsistence calculation. Applicants also need health insurance covering all risks in Austria and the required passport, photo, admission and case-specific civil or financial records. A liability declaration is permitted for this title.
Working While Studying
A third-country student needs an employment permit even for marginal employment. The prospective employer—not the student—applies to the Public Employment Service (AMS). A permit for up to 20 hours per week may be granted without a labour-market test, provided employment does not jeopardise the primary purpose of residence: study. Never start work until the required employment authorisation is in place.
Renewal and the Graduate Option
Renewal requires evidence of successful study or progress toward the degree, in addition to continuing to satisfy the residence conditions. After successfully completing a qualifying Austrian programme, graduates may apply for a one-time 12-month renewal to search for work or start a business. A later Red-White-Red Card is a separate application with its own requirements; graduation does not make the switch automatic.
