There is no single maximum age: compare age points across Austrian work routes and see how older applicants can still qualify.
Austria has no single work-visa maximum age
A person's age can change a points score, but it is not a universal ban on working or immigrating after a particular birthday. Each route must be checked separately. The EU Blue Card uses qualification, contract, salary and labour-market conditions without a points grid, while several Red-White-Red Card categories award age points only within specified bands. Receiving zero age points is not automatically the same as being ineligible.
Age points for shortage-occupation workers
The official Skilled Worker in a Shortage Occupation grid for 2026 awards 15 points under age 30, 10 under age 40 and 5 under age 50. At 50 or above, no age points are awarded, but the applicant may still reach the required 55 through completed training, matching experience, language skills and any permitted bonus. A binding offer in a listed occupation and compliant pay remain mandatory.
Other Key Workers and highly qualified applicants
The Other Key Worker grid awards 15 points under 30 and 10 under 40, with no age points at 40 or above; it still requires 55 overall plus the 2026 salary floor and labour-market test. Very Highly Qualified Workers use another table that awards age points up to specified limits, but education, research, senior experience, languages and Austrian study can carry more weight. Always calculate in the intended category.
Routes without an age-points test
The Austrian EU Blue Card page does not state a maximum age or points test; instead it focuses on the qualifying degree or experience exception, a six-month offer, education-job match, the €55,678 annual threshold for 2026 and the AMS labour-market test. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens use free-movement rules rather than these third-country card systems. Regulated-profession recognition is independent of age.
A stronger strategy for older applicants
Do not hide your age or chase a category that does not fit. Strengthen what the actual grid rewards: documented matching experience, accepted language evidence, a precise job description, compliant pay and complete qualification records.
