The Core 2026 Requirements
Austria’s EU Blue Card is available to qualifying third-country nationals with a binding Austrian job offer for at least six months. The employment must correspond to the applicant’s education and pay at least €55,678 gross annually in 2026, including special payments. A labour-market test must also show that no equally qualified jobseeker registered with AMS is available. Unlike several Red-White-Red Card routes, the EU Blue Card has no points system.
Education—or the ICT Experience Exception
The standard route requires completion of a programme lasting at least three years at a university or other tertiary institution. For information and communications technology professionals and service managers, at least three years of relevant professional experience may replace the degree if it is comparable to a three-year tertiary programme and was acquired within the seven years before application. Regulated professions can still require separate Austrian professional recognition.
Salary and Job Offer Checks
The €55,678 figure is the official 2026 threshold and includes annual salary plus special payments. It is not a monthly net-income promise. Confirm the gross annual amount, working hours, collective agreement, job description and duration in the signed offer. The offer must match the qualification; a high salary alone does not cure a mismatch. Because the threshold can change annually, use the official migration portal for the year in which you apply.
Application, Employer and Labour-Market Test
Applications may be submitted through the competent Austrian representation or, in permitted cases, in Austria; a prospective employer may also submit the application to the responsible residence authority. AMS conducts the labour-market assessment. If a visa is required after approval, a Visa D may be needed to enter Austria and collect the residence title. Applying in Austria does not automatically extend a lawful stay, so never assume that a pending application permits overstaying.
After Approval
The card links residence and employment to the approved position and employer. The federal migration FAQ states that it is generally issued for two years. A holder may later qualify for a Red-White-Red Card plus after employment matching the eligibility conditions for at least 21 months in the previous 24 months. Check family, renewal and employer-change rules before relying on a future step; approval is always case-specific.
