Compare who pays, employer choice, contracts, incentives and when independent advice may be worth paying for.
Why a recruitment service can be free to the nurse
A recruitment agency may be paid by the employer that needs staff. That can be a legitimate model: the nurse pays no advisory fee and the employer funds sourcing, language preparation or relocation support. 'Free' describes who pays the agency; it does not automatically tell you whether travel, translations, exams, accommodation or early-exit costs are covered.
The incentive difference
An employer-funded recruiter is engaged to fill vacancies for its clients. An independent consultant paid by you is engaged to review your choices and documents within the agreed scope. Neither model is automatically better, but the incentive matters when comparing employers, repayment clauses, recognition routes or whether a move should proceed at all.
Employer choice and exclusivity
Ask a recruiter how many employers it represents, whether you can apply elsewhere, whether an exclusivity period applies and what happens if you reject the offered facility. A narrow employer network can still produce a good placement, but it is different from a market-wide search. Put every restriction, repayment trigger and minimum service period in writing.
What an independent assessment adds
Independent work can map the official recognition route, review the evidence you already have, compare a contract with the promised package and identify questions for the authority or employer. It does not create recognition powers, accelerate an authority or guarantee work. The €99 assessment is most useful before signing a restrictive contract or paying for translations whose format has not been confirmed.
When the free agency is probably enough
A free agency may be enough when the legal employer is verified, the role and salary are clear, costs and repayment are documented, you understand the recognition decision and you are comfortable with the employer choice. Request the full contract early and independently verify any claim that a permit, recognition result or start date is guaranteed.
When paying for independent advice can make sense
Consider independent review when two offers differ, large repayments are involved, your diploma route is unclear, family residence affects the decision, the offered duties do not match the recognition stage or you are asked to surrender originals or pay an intermediary. The value is risk reduction and clarity—not access to a secret government channel.
A fair comparison checklist
Compare the legal employer, job title, workplace, collective agreement, gross annual pay, working hours, recognition responsibilities, German course, housing, travel, authority fees, contract duration, probation, notice, exclusivity and repayment. Then compare what happens if recognition takes longer, the employer withdraws or you leave. Choose from written evidence, not the word 'free' or a sales promise.
