Alquiler, compras, transporte, sanidad — ¿cuánto cuesta realmente vivir en Viena? Guía presupuestaria práctica.

Build a Personal Budget, Not a Universal One

Living costs vary sharply by household size, district, contract type and when the tenancy began. Statistics Austria reported an Austria-wide average rent including running costs of €10.50 per square metre in the first quarter of 2026, but that national average is not a quotation for a new private rental in Vienna.

When comparing homes, separate base rent, operating costs, heating, electricity, internet and any furniture or parking charge. New contracts and short-duration contracts can differ substantially from long-standing regulated tenancies.

    Transport Changed in 2026

The old claim that Vienna's annual public-transport pass always costs €365 is no longer current. Wiener Linien introduced a new fare structure from 1 January 2026; the regular digital annual pass was announced at €461. Check the current product, eligibility and purchase method before budgeting.

Your commuting cost can also depend on whether the job is within Vienna or requires regional ÖBB or Verkehrsverbund travel. Ask the employer about job tickets or commuter support.

    Food, Insurance and One-Off Costs

Food and household spending depends on diet and shopping habits, so fixed online estimates should be treated as examples only. Employed people above the marginal-employment threshold are generally covered by statutory social insurance, but prescriptions, private services and some treatments can still create out-of-pocket costs.

A relocation budget should also reserve money for a deposit, temporary accommodation, document work, travel, household setup and the period before the first salary arrives. Do not assume subsidized housing will be immediately available to a newcomer.

    A Practical Calculation

Start with the verified annual net income from the official gross-to-net calculator. Add all guaranteed special payments and allowances, then subtract the exact housing offer, current transport product and a conservative household budget.

Keep an emergency reserve rather than treating the difference as guaranteed savings. Rent increases, recognition costs and family-reunification expenses can materially change the first-year result.
