Cómo funciona el sistema de seguro social austriaco, qué cubre desde el primer día y registro de la tarjeta electrónica.
When Statutory Insurance Begins
Employees earning above the applicable marginal-employment threshold are generally compulsorily insured for health, accident and pension. The employer registers the employment, but you should verify that registration and keep the social-insurance details.
Before employment begins, your immigration or residence procedure may require separate insurance covering all risks. An expected future job does not automatically cover an uninsured period before the employment starts.
What the e-card Does
The e-card is evidence used to access the Austrian statutory healthcare system; it does not store medical records on the card itself. It is normally issued when the required insurance and identity information are available.
If the card has not arrived, contact the responsible insurer about proof of coverage. Do not delay necessary treatment solely because the physical card is pending.
Coverage Is Broad, but Not Every Cost Is Zero
Statutory insurance covers medically necessary services under its rules and contracts, but prescription fees, deductibles, hospital contributions, private doctors and non-covered services may create costs. Check with ÖGK or the responsible carrier before assuming a service is free.
Dependants can often be co-insured when conditions are met. Children are commonly covered without an additional contribution, while co-insurance of a spouse or partner can involve conditions or an additional contribution.
Before and After Arrival
Confirm the insurance start date in writing, arrange compliant interim cover if necessary and carry proof when dealing with the residence authority. After starting work, verify registration and your e-card status.
For current prescription fees, contribution limits and exemptions, rely on the Austrian Social Insurance or ÖGK website because amounts are indexed and can change each year.
