The Sponsor's Permit Determines the Route

Family reunification is not a single procedure for every nurse. The available residence title, documents, German requirement and application location depend on the sponsor's nationality and residence status and on the family relationship.

For third-country sponsors holding a Red-White-Red Card or EU Blue Card, qualifying family members can generally apply for a Red-White-Red Card Plus. Use the official family-reunification page to confirm the current route.

Employment Rights Are Not Delayed by a General 12-Month Rule

The previous version of this guide incorrectly stated that spouses receive work authorization after 12 months. A granted Red-White-Red Card Plus provides unrestricted labour-market access; qualifying family members of Red-White-Red Card holders may apply for it immediately.

Work may begin only when the family member holds the residence title or other authorization that permits it. The right is connected to the granted status, not merely to filing an application.

Income, Insurance and Accommodation

Residence authorities examine secure livelihood, health insurance and adequate accommodation. For 2026, the official general reference rates are €1,308.39 for a single person, €2,064.12 for a married couple and €201.88 for each child, subject to the statutory treatment of regular costs.

These figures are not a simple salary threshold. The authority calculates the case under residence law, including relevant regular expenses and acceptable evidence. Use the current official guidance rather than an old blog number.

Documents and German

Common evidence includes passports, proof of the family relationship, accommodation, insurance, livelihood and the sponsor's status. The authority may require originals, translations, legalized documents or criminal-record evidence depending on the case.

A1 German can apply to a first application, with statutory exceptions for some sponsor categories and applicants. Confirm the exception before booking an exam or submitting without a certificate.
