From an Albanian nursing diploma through nostrification, German B2 and registration to a compliant Austrian job and residence title.

Albanian Nursing Education Normally Requires Nostrification

Albania is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so nursing education completed there normally follows Austria's nostrification procedure. A narrow recognition exception may apply only where the same third-country qualification was already formally recognised for the profession in an EU, EEA or Swiss state and the nurse proves at least three years of relevant lawful practice there. An EU residence card alone does not change the diploma's origin.

Select the Austrian Level and Build the Evidence File

Austria distinguishes graduate nursing, Pflegefachassistenz and Pflegeassistenz. The Albanian job or diploma title alone does not determine equivalence; the authority compares duration, subjects, theory, clinical placements, hours and competencies. Gather the diploma, transcript, full curriculum, separate theory and practice hours, licence or professional status, good standing, detailed employment certificates, identity and name-change records. Confirm certified-copy, German-translation and legalisation requirements before filing.

Expect a Written Comparison and Possible Compensatory Measures

A university of applied sciences handles graduate-nurse nostrification, while the competent provincial authority handles assistant levels. If substantial differences remain, the decision may prescribe examinations, courses or clinical placements. Limited work at a lower level for up to two years may be possible only when the decision expressly permits it and Health Professions Register conditions are met. A recruiter cannot replace or pre-judge that official decision.

German B2, Registration and the Job Offer Must Align

Nursing in Austria lists German B2 for graduate-nurse entry in the Health Professions Register, and registration is mandatory before practising. Learn clinical German for medication, documentation, handover and patient consent while the file is assessed. Nursing levels appear on the nationwide 2026 shortage list, so a binding offer may support a Red-White-Red Card assessment, but lawful pay, points, professional authorisation and general residence conditions still apply.

Use the Tirana Residence Route Without Confusing Travel and Work

Albanian biometric-passport holders can make visa-free tourist or business visits for up to 90 days, but this does not authorise nursing work. The Austrian Embassy Tirana states that longer stays require a national Visa D or residence title and lists a €218 residence application fee in 2026. Coordinate nostrification, registration, a correctly classified offer and residence approval before starting. Never pay for a guaranteed recognition, job or permit.
