You do not need to begin with a speculative move. Identify the correct nursing authority, organise document delivery and find out which later steps require your presence.

You can prepare from abroad, but there is no single submission procedure

For many applicants, starting the document work while still at home is more sensible than moving first. Austria separates professional recognition from nostrification, and the competent body depends on the qualification and profession. Use the official Nursing in Austria guide before choosing a portal, paying for translations or appointing a representative.

The key distinction is between preparing a file remotely and completing every later requirement without travelling. A procedure may accept an application from abroad while still requiring verification of originals, an assessment or training at a later stage. An online upload does not turn the whole process into a remote course, nor does an application create Austrian residence or employment rights.

Choose the authority before choosing a representative

Write down the country of your original training, the institution, exact qualification title and the Austrian profession you are seeking. Include any subsequent recognition and lawful nursing practice in another country. EU/EEA or Swiss training and many third-country qualifications follow different routes; DGKP, Pflegefachassistenz and Pflegeassistenz must not be treated as interchangeable.

Ask the competent body to confirm that it can handle your file. Do not assume that a university offering a nursing degree can assess every vocational nursing certificate. If someone offers to apply to several institutions at once, first check whether that is allowed for the chosen procedure. An agency’s convenience should not decide which authority receives your application.

Remote submission: two examples, not a universal checklist

For the general-care recognition route described by the Austrian Business Service Portal, the published options include a written application by post or electronically signed email. Its document list includes an Austrian residence permit or an Austrian postal address with an authorised recipient for formal delivery. Confirm how this requirement applies to your case before filing.

Hochschule Campus Wien, by contrast, directs its nostrification applicants to its electronic application rather than an email application. It also describes submission of original documents by an authorised person with the required power of attorney. These are institution-specific examples: a method accepted by one body should not be assumed valid at another.

Plan originals and formal delivery carefully

Create a document inventory identifying what you hold, what the school or employer must issue, and which form the chosen authority accepts. Ask how originals are checked, returned or presented by a representative. Keep a scanned copy and a record of each document dispatched. Do not hand over your only diploma without an agreed process for safeguarding and returning it.

A delivery recipient and someone authorised to represent you are not automatically the same thing. Define the role in writing and limit it to what is needed. Make sure notices reach you quickly enough to understand requests or deadlines. If a decision needs interpretation or an appeal may be necessary, seek qualified advice rather than relying only on a forwarding service.

Use waiting time for work you can control

Ask your school for the curriculum applicable to your actual study period and a detailed record of clinical training. Organise employment certificates and official evidence linking any name changes across the file. Start German preparation in parallel, while distinguishing application requirements from the language evidence needed for later training or professional practice.

Avoid ordering every time-sensitive certificate immediately simply to make the file look complete. Confirm validity and submission timing with the relevant body. Keep a task list with an owner, expected delivery date and dependency for each item. This turns the waiting period into useful preparation rather than repeated requests for status updates.

Identify the first step that really requires travel

Ask which appointments can be remote, when original-document verification takes place and whether any clinical placement, examination or course requires attendance. Request information about scheduling after a decision without assuming that a particular semester or placement is already reserved for you.

Build travel and housing plans around confirmed milestones. A recognition application, a training invitation and a work offer are different documents with different purposes. Before moving, make a separate plan for lawful entry or residence, any permitted work during training, health cover and living costs. Do not describe a pending nursing procedure as an approved work visa.

Common questions from applicants outside Austria

Must I use a paid agent? The existence of application forms or a representative option does not make an agency mandatory. Can I submit by ordinary email? Only follow the submission method accepted by your body; a general enquiry is not necessarily an application. Can my friend deliver documents? Ask about the required authority and identification instead of assuming informal permission is enough.

Does receiving a decision finish professional registration? Not necessarily. Complete its conditions and check the separate Health Professions Register requirements before practising. Can the authority give me a job? Qualification assessment and employer recruitment are separate functions. Preparing a strong file does not guarantee that either process succeeds.

    Prepare for a document-focused consultation

For Move to Austria’s €99 Initial Assessment, bring your diploma, training country, CV, any previous recognition decision and the submission instructions you have found. We can help organise the route, document gaps and questions for the competent body. We do not issue recognition decisions, reserve courses or automatically act as your legal representative or delivery recipient.

If you have already applied, include the acknowledgement and any request for missing documents. A useful session should help you decide the next concrete action, such as obtaining a curriculum or clarifying an original-document appointment. It should not encourage a second application or a move merely because your first file is taking time.
