Graduation can create a specific twelve-month bridge
A qualifying third-country graduate of an Austrian university, university of applied sciences or eligible private higher-education institution may apply for a one-time twelve-month renewal of the Student residence permit to look for employment or start a business. The federal portal describes the eligible completed programmes and the requirement to continue meeting the general residence conditions. This is a renewal route for qualifying graduates, not a fresh twelve-month permit available to anyone who studied anywhere in Europe.
Begin planning before your current Student title expires. Ask the university for completion confirmation and the final degree documents, and check the competent Austrian residence authority's current application list. The job-search renewal helps you remain lawfully in Austria while looking, but it does not automatically grant unrestricted full-time employment. Work during the bridge period still needs the appropriate authorisation.
Keep resources and health insurance in place
The renewal requires the applicable general residence conditions, including sufficient means of subsistence and health insurance. Prepare evidence covering the entire intended period rather than only the month when you file. A temporary student job or promised future salary may not prove a secure livelihood in the way the authority requires. Ask how housing expenses, savings and any lawful support are assessed for your particular case.
A completed degree can change your residence purpose, but it does not erase earlier reporting and document duties. Keep your passport valid, update the address when you move and retain a complete study history. If you plan to launch a company instead of taking a job, verify the business route separately; the search extension alone is not a blanket permission to carry on every self-employed activity.
A suitable offer can lead to a graduate RWR Card
The federal graduate route allows an eligible graduate who receives an offer from a specific Austrian employer, in work matching the level of the qualification, to apply for a Red White Red Card for graduates. The official guidance says this category does not use a labour-market test when its requirements are met. The employer must pay the locally customary gross minimum for comparable Austrian graduates. Do not assume that any casual job or internship qualifies because it is located in Austria.
Ask for the legal employer, concrete duties, qualification level, working hours and gross remuneration in writing. Map the job description to your Austrian degree. If the role is regulated, check licensing or professional recognition as well. Filing for the RWR Card does not itself convert your Student title into full-time work permission; agree a start date only after confirming the lawful authorisation sequence.
The part-time work rule remains separate
The federal FAQ says a third-country graduate on the twelve-month search extension may receive an employment permit for work of up to 20 hours per week without a labour-market test, with the prospective employer applying to AMS. This is a useful bridge while a suitable full-time offer develops, but it is still an employer-filed permission. Do not let a company characterise paid work as a trial or informal internship to avoid the application.
Keep hours, contract and employment-permit evidence together. A graduate may also qualify through another immigration category if a job does not fit the graduate route, but that requires a separate criteria check. Compare routes before paying for translations or accepting a lower-grade position solely because an employer promises to “sort the visa later.”
A practical final-semester plan
Three months before expiry, confirm the residence renewal window, university completion date, insurance, resources and passport validity. Build a list of employers whose roles genuinely fit your studies. At offer stage, check the role and locally customary gross pay against the graduate RWR route. Give HR the official source and an evidence list so the employer can prepare the documents promptly.
