Learn what employer support really means, which promises belong in writing and how to price repayment clauses and housing.
Translate the advertisement into separate promises
'Visa support, German and accommodation' can mean anything from providing one form to paying substantial costs. Require separate written answers for residence application support, recognition, course tuition, exam fees, travel, temporary housing, permanent housing and payroll deductions. Do not treat a recruiter message as part of the employment contract.
Visa support
An employer can supply a binding offer, employer declaration and supporting documents and may file certain applications in Austria. It cannot guarantee approval. Confirm the intended residence category, qualifying salary, job title, working conditions, application location, start condition and who monitors lawful-stay deadlines.
German-course support
Ask for the provider, target level, hours, schedule, exam, permitted retakes and who pays tuition, books, travel and living costs during study. Clarify whether you are already employed and insured during the course. If funding is repayable, demand the maximum amount, reducing balance, triggers and exceptions when the employer ends the relationship or recognition fails.
Accommodation support
Identify whether housing is a hotel, staff room, shared flat or independent lease; how long it lasts; total rent and deposit; address-registration permission; commuting time; visitors or family rules; and notice. 'Accommodation provided' can still mean a payroll deduction or a room that ends when the job ends. Never send a deposit before verifying the landlord, property and agreement.
Recognition support
A responsible employer can help collect workplace documents and coordinate a lawful start, but the competent institution decides recognition or nostrification. Confirm who pays translations, legalisation, fees and compensation measures and what role you may legally perform while measures are pending. The contract must match that role.
Repayment and lock-in
List every recoverable expense and calculate the worst-case amount if you leave after one, six or twelve months. Check whether the balance declines, which events trigger payment and whether deductions can be made from salary. Obtain independent legal advice for a clause you do not understand; general relocation consulting is not a substitute for contract-law advice.
A safer offer checklist
Verify the legal employer, workplace, collective agreement, classification, gross annual guaranteed pay, hours, shifts, probation, notice, recognition condition, residence route, course, housing and repayment. Use the free nurse eligibility form to organize your route; use the €99 assessment when you have a concrete offer or document set that needs an independent planning review.
