What “visa sponsorship” means in Austria, which permits need a binding job offer, what the employer submits and which decisions remain with the authorities.

Austria Has No Single “Sponsorship Visa”

Employers and job platforms often use “visa sponsorship” as shorthand, but Austrian law does not provide one permit with that name. A third-country national must qualify for a specific route, such as a Red-White-Red Card category or an EU Blue Card, and the competent authorities—not the company—decide the application.

A Binding Job Offer Is Usually Essential

Most employment-based Red-White-Red Card routes and the EU Blue Card require a legally binding offer from an Austrian employer. The job, salary, working conditions and applicant’s qualifications must satisfy the selected route; a general promise to help after arrival is not the same as an eligible employment offer.

    What the Employer Actually Provides

The prospective employer supplies the employment contract or binding offer and an employer’s declaration describing the role, pay and workplace. Depending on the route, the employer may file the application with the Austrian residence authority, but the AMS and residence authority still assess labour-market, qualification and residence requirements.

Choose the Permit Before Accepting the Offer

Compare the offer with the current rules for shortage occupations, Other Key Workers, the EU Blue Card or another applicable category. Salary thresholds, shortage lists and required points can change, and regulated professions such as nursing also need professional recognition; immigration approval alone does not authorize professional practice.

    Avoid Recruitment and Sponsorship Scams

Be cautious when anyone sells a “guaranteed sponsored visa,” asks you to pay for a job offer or refuses to identify the employer and contract terms. Verify the company, obtain the offer in writing and check the route on migration.gv.at; no recruiter, employer or adviser can guarantee the AMS or residence authority’s decision.
