Choose the Employer Before the City Ranking
There is no objectively best Austrian city for every nurse. The decisive factors are the specific employer, recognized pay classification, shift model, available role, recognition support, housing and the needs of accompanying family members.
A higher headline salary can be offset by housing or commuting costs. Compare written offers using annual net income and an actual rental search rather than generalized city averages.
Vienna, Graz and Linz
Larger cities offer multiple hospital networks, educational institutions and public-transport options. Vienna also has a broad international community, while Graz and Linz may provide different housing and commuting trade-offs.
Do not assume Vienna always pays most or Linz always leaves more disposable income. Employer classifications and individual rental contracts can reverse those comparisons.
Salzburg, Innsbruck and Regional Employers
Western Austria can offer attractive employers and access to the Alps, but housing availability should be verified before accepting a role. Smaller towns may have fewer rental listings and less frequent public transport even when the workplace actively recruits.
Ask whether temporary housing, relocation assistance or a job ticket is included. Treat employer-provided accommodation as part of the contract and clarify rent, duration and what happens when employment ends.
