Family reunification can lead to a card with open labour-market access. Understand whose permit matters and which conditions apply.
The spouse's own card determines work rights
A spouse of an Austrian Red White Red Card or EU Blue Card holder may qualify for a Red White Red Card Plus through family reunification. The Plus card gives its holder unrestricted access to employment and self-employment in Austria, without a separate employer-specific work permit. The main worker's Red White Red Card does not, by itself, authorise the spouse to start a job. The spouse needs the applicable Austrian residence and work title.
Check the family member's actual relationship and status. Austrian family-reunification rules generally cover spouses, registered partners and unmarried minor children. Spouses and registered partners must meet the age requirement at application. A boyfriend, girlfriend or adult child does not automatically qualify under the same category. Different rules can apply to EU citizens' family members, so identify the sponsor's citizenship and title before collecting documents.
Check the sponsor and family conditions together
The application normally needs proof of the worker's Austrian title, the marriage or registered partnership, valid travel documents, health insurance, appropriate accommodation where required and sufficient means of subsistence. The official migration portal publishes current reference amounts and explains how housing costs affect the calculation. A simple salary above a headline number may still be insufficient once the authority applies the full rules to the household.
Plan translations and any requested legalisation for civil-status records. If family members have lived in several countries, ask whether criminal-record certificates are needed. The spouse may need proof of basic German before immigration, but official exceptions exist for family members of certain sponsors, including holders of an EU Blue Card and a Red White Red Card for Very Highly Qualified Workers. Do not buy a course or exam based only on a generic spouse checklist.
Work may start when the correct right applies
A job offer can be gathered while the family application is prepared, but it should not be mistaken for permission to start. The family reunification page explains that the issued Red White Red Card Plus gives free access to the Austrian labour market and does not require an additional employment permit. The employer should inspect the spouse's actual title and lawful start date before onboarding.
This is useful for a spouse who wants to work in nursing, care, IT or hospitality. Immigration access, however, is only one condition. A spouse trained as a nurse abroad must still complete any Austrian professional recognition and registration required for the intended nursing role. An open labour-market card does not authorise practice under a protected professional title without the professional requirements.
Coordinate both application timelines
The worker and spouse should map their intended arrival dates, filing locations, card validity and housing together. A first family application is generally filed before entry at the competent Austrian representation, subject to lawful-entry and residence exceptions described by the authorities. Filing while lawfully in Austria does not automatically extend a short permitted stay. If a decision takes longer, a person may have to leave and await the result abroad.
Keep the work contract, payslips, title copy, tenancy evidence and marriage documentation current. If the worker changes employers or permit category while the family case is pending, tell the authority and review whether the sponsor still satisfies the conditions. The spouse's card validity can be linked to the sponsor's title in some cases, so plan renewals as a household rather than separate administrative errands.
A focused decision checklist
Write down the sponsor's exact permit category, spouse's nationality, relationship document, household income, rent, insurance, accommodation and German-language position. Put each item beside the official rule and supporting evidence. This turns a broad “can my spouse work?” question into an application plan, and helps avoid paying for a job-search service when the immediate problem is an incomplete family file.
Our paid assessment can review this plan and point out missing evidence or sequencing risks. It cannot issue the spouse's card, guarantee a start date or give permission to practise a regulated profession. Confirm the current family-reunification and Red White Red Card Plus rules using the federal sources below, especially before making financial commitments or resigning from work abroad.
