EU, EEA and Swiss citizens usually need no work visa, but residence registration and employment evidence matter after three months.
EU free movement replaces the work visa
Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland normally do not need a Spanish work visa or employer-sponsored work permit to take employment or self-employment in Spain. They enter with a valid national identity card or passport and rely on free-movement rights. This is different from having no administration at all: tax, Social Security, local registration and residence formalities still apply.
Register residence after three months
A person who will remain in Spain for more than three months must personally request registration in the Central Register of Foreigners through the competent Foreigners Office or police station. The Spanish government page says the request must be made within three months of entry and that the certificate records identity, nationality, address, NIE and registration date. An appointment is normally needed.
Workers prove the economic basis of residence
An employee can use an employer declaration, employment certificate, registered contract or proof of Social Security registration. A self-employed person can show tax-activity registration, Commercial Registry evidence or Social Security status. The government page distinguishes workers from economically inactive residents, who instead need sufficient resources and comprehensive health coverage.
NIE, residence certificate and Social Security differ
The NIE is an identifying number, not by itself proof of residence or work authorization. The EU registration certificate documents residence registration, while the Social Security number and registration connect the worker to the contribution system. Employers must register employees before employment begins; the worker may request a Social Security number if one has not already been assigned.
Family nationality can change the paperwork
An EU worker's EU family member generally uses EU registration rules, while a non-EU family member normally needs the residence-card procedure for family of an EU citizen. Do not send every family member through the same application simply because they travel together. Check the relationship evidence, entry requirements, three-month timing and the current Spanish appointment route for each nationality.
