Plan when workers can reunite family, eligible relatives, income, housing, insurance and family members' work rights.

The family route depends on the worker's permit

Spain's general family-reunification authorization is for relatives of a legally resident third-country national. Under the ordinary regime, the sponsor can generally apply after residing in Spain for at least one year and applying to remain for at least another year, subject to listed exceptions. Holders of Law 14/2013 permits, such as qualifying highly skilled or teleworker routes, use their specific linked-family procedure and may apply together.

Eligible relatives are defined by law

The general route covers a spouse or qualifying partner, children including qualifying adopted children, certain represented minors or dependent persons, and in restricted circumstances dependent ascendants. Each relationship and any dependency must be documented in the form required by Spain. A marriage or birth certificate alone may still need apostille or legalization and sworn translation.

Income, housing and insurance are assessed

The sponsor must show fixed and regular resources, suitable housing and health coverage for the family. The Ministry's general sheet expresses the standard two-person resource level as 150% of IPREM plus 50% for each additional member, with special possible reductions involving minors. Amounts and evidence can change, so use the current IPREM and authority instructions rather than an old online calculator.

There are linked authorization and visa stages

The sponsor files the residence authorization in Spain. The official general decision period is two months. After approval, the family member normally has two months to request the visa at the competent consulate, then follows the consular decision, collection and entry deadlines. The TIE must generally be requested within one month of entry. Each stage has separate documents; authorization approval is not the physical residence card.

Spouses, partners and working-age children can work

The Ministry states that reunited spouses, registered or qualifying partners and children of working age may work for an employer or on their own account anywhere in Spain and in any occupation without a separate administrative procedure. Verify that the issued status is the qualifying reunification authorization before work begins. Ascendants and unusual dependency cases should not assume identical labour rights without checking the actual decision.
