Learn who qualifies as an international teleworker, foreign-company rules, Spanish work limits and Social Security duties.

The route is for international remote work

Spain's international teleworker route is for adult third-country nationals who perform employment or professional activity remotely for businesses established outside Spain, using information and telecommunications systems. The role must genuinely be capable of exclusive remote delivery. Work that needs regular on-site production, staff supervision or sales visits may not fit merely because some tasks happen online.

    Employee and freelancer rules differ

An employee can work only for the foreign company supporting the application. A self-employed professional may serve Spanish clients only while maintaining the qualifying foreign relationship, and Spanish professional work must not exceed 20% of total activity. A freelancer must evidence a commercial relationship of at least three months with the foreign business; the complete file also addresses the foreign company's real activity.

Social Security is a central requirement

The UGE FAQ states that Spanish Social Security registration is required because the activity is performed from Spain. For employees, foreign coverage can replace Spanish registration only where an applicable international agreement permits export and the foreign authority issues the required certificate. Self-employed applicants must register in Spain's RETA; the FAQ says bilateral export is not available to replace that duty.

Income, insurance and background evidence matter

Applicants need adequate work-derived resources, with the official FAQ expressing the main applicant's threshold as 200% of Spain's minimum wage and additional percentages for family. They also need qualifying health coverage and criminal-record evidence. Travel insurance, reimbursement-only cover, waiting periods or copay policies may not satisfy the stated standard, so obtain a written policy certificate tailored to the UGE requirement.

Choose the correct place of filing

From abroad, the official FAQ directs applicants to the Spanish consulate for an international teleworker visa, which authorizes residence and work for one year. An applicant lawfully in Spain may use the residence-authorization procedure if eligible. Family members can apply together or later and Law 14/2013 authorizations let qualifying family members work, but current documents and financial amounts must be verified at filing.
