The Blue Card is for highly qualified paid work
Spain's EU Blue Card is a residence authorization for third-country nationals taking highly qualified employment. It is not for self-employment. The applicant needs a valid contract or binding offer for at least six months, the required professional qualification and a salary at or above the Spanish threshold. A regulated profession also requires evidence that Spain's legal practice conditions are met.
Use the June 2026 salary thresholds
Spain's official June 2026 update sets the general gross annual threshold at €41,356.36 and the reduced threshold at €33,085.09. The reduction can apply to qualifying shortage occupations in CNO groups 1 and 2 and to third-country nationals who obtained the required qualification within the previous three years. Check the UGE update again on the filing date because the calculation can change after new salary statistics.
Education or experience must match the role
The standard qualification route uses at least three years of higher education at the required framework level. Alternatively, five years of relevant professional knowledge and competence may be accepted as equivalent; for specified ICT professionals and managers, three relevant years within the previous seven can qualify. The evidence must be pertinent to the occupation, and regulated professions need homologation or recognition.
The UGE handles the application
The company or qualifying foreign professional files electronically with the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit using the mobility form and supporting records. The official information sheet lists a twenty-day decision period and requires, among other items, passport, criminal-record evidence, insurance or public coverage, resources, qualification evidence, signed contract and fee. Documents from abroad may need apostille or legalization and sworn translation.
Compare the Blue Card with the national permit
Spain also has a national highly qualified professional permit. The routes differ in qualification rules and mobility framework, although the June 2026 notice gives the same €41,356.36 headline threshold for the national route without a reduced level. Ask the employer which modality it will file and why, verify the current salary notice, and do not assume a job title alone proves high qualification.
