Understand Spain's national highly qualified permit, eligible qualifications, employer filing and the 2026 salary threshold.
Spain has two highly qualified modalities
Law 14/2013 provides a highly qualified professional authorization with an EU Blue Card modality and a national modality. Both are residence-and-work routes for third-country nationals, but their qualification tests and mobility context differ. The hiring company should identify the intended modality in the application; applicants should not use the terms Blue Card and highly qualified visa as if they were identical.
The national route accepts qualification or experience
For the national highly qualified route, the official sheet describes a higher-education qualification comparable to at least the relevant Spanish framework level, or knowledge, skills and competencies supported by at least three years of professional experience that can be considered equivalent. The evidence must relate to the proposed work, and regulated professions still need the required recognition or homologation.
The 2026 national salary threshold is explicit
The Ministry's June 2026 salary notice gives a single gross annual threshold of €41,356.36 for the national highly qualified professional authorization and states that no reduced threshold applies. This amount is an official snapshot, not a permanent promise: the underlying salary statistic can be updated, so the employer should attach the current notice and confirm the figure immediately before filing.
Application goes to the strategic unit
The company or eligible foreign professional files electronically with the UGE using the mobility application. The official checklist includes passport, recent criminal-record certificate plus the required declaration, health coverage, resources, qualifications or experience, signed employment contract, company identity and representation, and the fee. The published decision period is twenty days, subject to a complete and valid file.
Check the job, company and route together
A senior-sounding title does not automatically qualify. Compare actual duties, qualification evidence, gross annual salary, employer identity and chosen modality. Ask whether the company will file, who will respond to UGE requests and whether professional recognition is complete. Family applications can be linked under Law 14/2013, but each family member needs the required documents and the current UGE rules should be checked.
