Foreign Nurse to First Shift in Austria: 2026 Roadmap

Step 1: identify the Austrian profession and procedure
Start by mapping your education to PA, PFA or DGKP and determining whether recognition or nostrification applies. EU, EEA and Swiss qualifications generally use recognition; qualifications earned in third countries generally require nostrification, with a limited recognition exception after authorisation and at least three years of relevant legal practice in an EU, EEA state or Switzerland. Step 2: build the decision-ready education file
Collect diploma, annual records, detailed curriculum, separate theory and clinical hours, placement descriptions, licence or professional-status evidence, work references, identity and name-change documents. Follow the competent authority’s exact rules for originals, certified copies, legalisation and translations. Start German in parallel. A complete, structured file reduces avoidable requests, but no adviser can promise the authority’s timeline or outcome.
Step 3: complete measures and develop the employment route
If the decision identifies examinations, courses or placements, book only a programme confirmed to satisfy those requirements. A final decision may allow temporary lower-level work for up to two years, with mandatory register entry. Search verified employers using the exact lawful title and make offers conditional on recognition, German, registration and immigration rather than agreeing to an unrealistic fixed start date.
Step 4: coordinate immigration and relocation
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens follow free-movement rules; third-country nationals need an appropriate residence and employment route, such as a qualifying Red-White-Red Card category. Nursing appearing on the shortage list does not itself grant a permit. Align employer declaration, qualification evidence and filing location. After arrival, complete address registration and other residence steps within the applicable deadlines.
Step 5: register professionally before the first shift
Prepare the Health Professions Register application with qualification decision, identity, photo, trustworthiness, medical-fitness and German evidence. PA and PFA register at B1; DGKP at B2. Do not work or use the protected title until registration confirmation and all employment permissions are valid.
