The register level depends on the Austrian profession
The official German-language evidence sheet sets B1 for Pflegeassistenz (PA) and Pflegefachassistenz (PFA), and B2 for DGKP registration. These are professional-register thresholds, not promises that every school, compensatory course or employer uses the same admission standard. PFA education, a hospital or a specialised ward may expect stronger German, so verify each additional requirement separately.
Recognised exam providers are named
The register guidance lists certificates or test records from providers including ÖSD, ÖIF, Goethe-Institut, telc, TestDaF and the University of Vienna Language Center, subject to a plausibility check in the individual case. If you test outside Austria, use an authorised examination centre linked to the recognised provider. Check the latest information sheet before paying because names and evidence rules can change.
Course attendance alone is not proof
A confirmation that you attended a German course does not count as language proof. You normally need an examination certificate, diploma or test record showing the required level. Keep the complete original or verifiable digital result, not only a screenshot. Ensure your personal details match the passport and resolve spelling or name differences before registration to avoid preventable requests for more evidence.
German may sometimes be shown another way
For foreign-trained applicants, a separate certificate may not be needed if the required German clearly results from at least one year of full-time education in German or from the person’s life history. This is not self-certification: the registration authority evaluates whether the evidence is sufficient. Send the facts before assuming an exemption, and retain a test plan until written confirmation is clear.
Plan for safe clinical communication, not only the certificate
Passing B1 or B2 solves one formal requirement, but work still requires handovers, documentation, medication communication and conversations with patients and relatives.
