B1 and B2 are tied to different Austrian nursing levels
For entry in Austria's Health Professions Register, the official Nursing in Austria pages state B1 for Pflegeassistenz (PA) and Pflegefachassistenz (PFA), and B2 for graduate nursing (DGKP). Registration is required before practising under these regulated titles. Your foreign diploma name does not choose the language level; the Austrian profession granted in the recognition or nostrification decision does.
Training admission can demand more than registration
Do not confuse the register threshold with admission to education or compensatory measures. The official PFA profile lists B2 German for admission although B1 is listed for later register entry. Universities, schools and nostrification programmes can specify accepted certificates, validity rules, interviews or additional proof. Always check the institution's current requirements before paying for an exam.
A certificate is not the same as safe clinical German
Employers may assess whether you can understand handovers, document observations, explain procedures, confirm medication orders and escalate deterioration safely. Practise speaking with patients, relatives, doctors and colleagues, including Austrian vocabulary and dialect exposure. A candidate who barely passes the formal level may still need targeted clinical-language training before a hospital or care home offers unrestricted duties.
Choose the exam from the receiving body's list
ÖSD, ÖIF, Goethe and telc certificates are commonly encountered, but acceptance is controlled by the relevant register, school, university or employer—not by a language school or recruiter. Confirm the required level, module combination, examination date, result timing and whether the certificate can be older than a stated limit. Keep the original and a clear digital copy for applications.
Build one plan for language, recognition and employment
Identify whether your likely Austrian level is PA, PFA or DGKP, then map the official language gate and the practical level needed for your target role. Start document preparation while learning German, but do not claim a protected nursing title before recognition and registration.
