A practical guide to the two-year 3,200-hour PFA qualification, expanded duties, B1 registration and foreign recognition.

PFA Sits Between PA and Graduate Nursing

Pflegefachassistenz, or PFA, is Austria's nursing assistant level 2 and a regulated profession with more competencies than PA. PFA works in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation, home nursing and mobile services. In addition to PA tasks, authorised activities can include standardised diagnostics such as ECG, inserting gastric tubes or peripheral venous catheters and administering defined injections or infusions under the statutory delegation framework. PFA is not the same as DGKP and does not carry the entire nursing-process responsibility.

The Standard Qualification Is Two Years and 3,200 Hours

PFA education normally lasts two years and includes 3,200 hours of theory and practice at a health and nursing institution. Alternative paths include higher vocational schools and apprenticeships, while an existing PA qualification can enable a shortened progression. Admission generally requires successful tenth-grade completion or authorisation as PA, health suitability, trustworthiness, German B2 and a standardised admission process with interview. Always check the specific provider's dates and funding arrangements.

Training Admission and Register Language Are Different

A frequent source of confusion is that official PFA guidance lists B2 German for admission to education but B1 for entry in the Health Professions Register after qualification. A school or employer may still require stronger German for safe practice. Prepare technical language for ECG instructions, catheters, medication, documentation, delegation and escalation. Confirm accepted register certificates separately from the institution's entrance assessment.

Foreign PFA Education Must Be Formally Matched

EU, EEA and Swiss PFA-type qualifications normally use professional recognition, while third-country education follows nostrification through the competent Austrian provincial authority. The authority compares subjects, duration, theory, clinical practice and competencies, and may prescribe compensatory measures. A decision for PFA with outstanding measures can permit temporary PA employment for up to two years, provided registration and the exact conditions are satisfied. It does not authorise full PFA work early.

Evaluate PFA Jobs Beyond the Advertised Salary

Search Pflegefachassistenz or PFA and confirm the workplace, legal title, collective-agreement group, credited experience, base salary, night and weekend supplements, hours and conditional start date. PFA appears on Austria's nationwide 2026 shortage list, which may support an eligible third-country residence route, but does not replace professional authorisation. Compare progression opportunities toward a nursing bachelor as well as immediate pay, and reject employers assigning DGKP duties without the corresponding qualification.
