Check the 21-of-24-month work condition, renewal window, evidence and the moment unrestricted labour-market access begins.

The Plus card changes your access to the job market

A standard Red White Red Card normally links you to one approved employer. The Red White Red Card Plus allows fixed-term residence and unrestricted employed or self-employed work in Austria, without a named-employer restriction. That difference makes an upgrade valuable when you want a promotion, a new employer or additional work. The Plus card is a separate residence-title decision, not an automatic consequence of holding the first card for two years.

The same Plus title can be issued under several legal routes, including family reunification. This guide addresses the common upgrade after qualifying employment on a Red White Red Card or Austrian EU Blue Card. Use the family route guidance if you are applying as a spouse or child; its evidence and timing differ from an employment-based upgrade.

Check 21 qualifying months in the preceding 24

The federal migration portal states that a holder may apply after employment in accordance with the original Red White Red Card or EU Blue Card eligibility conditions for at least 21 months during the preceding 24 months. Count qualifying work, not merely the months since your plastic card was printed. The Public Employment Service examines the work condition. Ask for your employment and social-insurance records early enough to resolve gaps or discrepancies.

Build a month-by-month table with employer, role, work start and end, pay, leave and the condition under which the original card was granted. A switch in duties, reduced hours, prolonged absence or job loss can change the assessment. Do not assume every month of Austrian residence counts as qualifying work. If the record is borderline, get the authority's guidance before promising a new employer that unrestricted work rights will arrive on a given day.

File in the renewal window, before expiry

Austria's general renewal guidance says an application may be submitted no earlier than three months before the current permit expires, and it should be filed before expiry. A timely extension application generally preserves lawful residence during the procedure. The federal FAQ also says a person may continue working for the previous employer on the basis of the previous permit while a timely extension is pending. It does not turn an employer-specific card into open access during processing.

Set reminders for the first day of the renewal window, the document-ordering deadline and the last safe filing date. Check which district authority or municipal office is competent for your address; Vienna and other provinces can route applications differently. If the current card has already expired, do not treat ordinary renewal advice as a cure. Official guidance gives only narrow exceptions for a late application.

Prepare the evidence and general conditions

A practical file includes passport, current residence card, recent photograph, employment contract, payslips, social-insurance extract, and any evidence needed to show that work matched the original permit conditions. The authority may ask for insurance, adequate means and other general residence evidence depending on the case. Check the current document list rather than reusing an old first-application checklist.

If your passport will expire soon, address that before filing where possible because it can affect card validity. Keep originals and legible copies, and arrange translations only when required. Ask for a written receipt when the application is submitted. Retain your old contract and title until the new card is issued and you understand its effective work rights.

Decide whether an employer change should wait

If you are close to Plus-card eligibility and have another offer, compare the employer-change procedure with the upgrade timeline. Changing jobs too early may affect the qualifying-month calculation or require a new employer-linked application. Remaining in an unsuitable job solely to reach a hoped-for card can also carry employment and financial risks. Make the decision from the actual dates and evidence, not from a blanket rule.

Once the Plus card has been issued, you may change employer without a new employer-specific work title under the published rules. Until then, follow the restrictions on your current card and any specific provisional-start rule for a properly filed change. An assessment can map the months and documents, but the residence authority and AMS decide whether the upgrade conditions are met.
