General DGKP authorisation comes first
A foreign ICU, anaesthesia or operating-room nurse first needs Austrian authorisation for general DGKP practice through recognition or nostrification and entry in the Health Professions Register. A foreign specialty title does not replace the underlying general nursing decision. Immigration and an employment offer remain separate requirements.
Austria regulates specialist nursing fields
Legally regulated specialisations include intensive care, anaesthesia nursing, operating-room nursing, paediatric and child-intensive care, psychiatric nursing, renal replacement therapy and hospital hygiene. The official health portal states that the relevant specialisation is mandatory when a DGKP works in a specialised field.
Foreign specialisation needs its own assessment
Recognition of a specialisation requires an existing Austrian authorisation in general nursing. Prepare the specialty diploma, curriculum, theory and practice hours, clinical placements and professional evidence under the ministry’s current checklist. Do not assume ICU experience alone equals the Austrian specialist qualification or skip the separate procedure.
An employer may support later completion
In practice, organisations may define a period in which an employed DGKP must complete the required Austrian specialisation. Ask whether the vacancy accepts candidates still completing it, who pays tuition, how study and placement time is scheduled, what repayment applies and which duties are allowed before completion. Put every condition in the contract.
Apply with two clearly separated files
Create one file for general DGKP recognition and registration and a second for specialist education and experience. Present both honestly to employers and avoid using a protected specialist title before authorisation.
