Austria Nursing Eligibility Checklist 2026: Can You Work There?

1. Identify Where Your Nursing Qualification Was Completed
The country of education determines the first legal route. Nursing qualifications completed in the EU, EEA or Switzerland normally follow Austria's professional-recognition procedure. Qualifications completed in a third country normally require nostrification. A limited recognition exception can apply when a third-country qualification was already recognised for the same profession in the EU, EEA or Switzerland and the applicant proves at least three years of relevant lawful practice there. Citizenship alone does not change the origin of the education.
2. Match Your Education to PA, PFA or DGKP
Austria regulates three nursing levels: Pflegeassistenz (PA), Pflegefachassistenz (PFA) and graduate nursing (DGKP). The name printed on a foreign diploma does not establish the Austrian level. Authorities compare duration, theory, clinical hours, subjects and professional competencies. PA and PFA applications involving third-country training go to the competent provincial authority; DGKP nostrification is handled by a university of applied sciences. Choose the authority through the official Nursing in Austria guide rather than a recruiter's guess.
3. Check Whether Your Documents Can Prove Equivalence
A usable file normally needs the diploma, transcript, complete curriculum, separate theory and clinical-hour evidence, placement records, professional licence or entitlement, good-standing evidence, detailed work references, identity records and name-change documents. Work references should state dates, weekly hours, departments and clinical tasks. Originals, certified copies, German translations and legalisation may be required. A qualification may be real but still impossible to compare quickly when the school records do not show its content.
4. Meet the Language, Register and Immigration Gates
Official language levels for Health Professions Register entry are B1 for PA and PFA and B2 for DGKP. Registration is mandatory before practising. Recognition or nostrification does not itself grant immigration permission, and a residence permit does not authorise a regulated nursing title without professional approval. Third-country nationals must coordinate the appropriate residence route and job offer; EU citizens use free-movement rules but still need professional recognition and registration where applicable.
5. Treat a Job Offer as Conditional Until Every Gate Aligns
Before relying on an offer, verify the exact Austrian title, duties, collective-agreement classification, credited experience, pay, shifts and start condition. Austria's 2026 shortage list includes the nursing levels, but shortage status is not automatic recognition or residence approval. A safe candidate can answer five questions: which authority decides, which level is being assessed, which documents are complete, which language proof is accepted and which immigration basis permits work.
