Yes, but a Foreign Diploma Is Not an Austrian Work Licence
A foreign nursing qualification can create a route to Austrian nursing work, but it does not permit immediate practice by itself. Nursing is regulated under Austrian law. The qualification must receive professional recognition or nostrification for an Austrian level, the applicant must meet the language and Health Professions Register requirements, and any necessary immigration permission must be valid. A hospital contract cannot legally replace any of these gates.
European Recognition and Third-Country Nostrification Are Different
Education completed in an EU or EEA state or Switzerland normally uses professional recognition. Third-country education normally uses nostrification, except for the limited case where the qualification was already recognised for the profession in the EU, EEA or Switzerland and at least three years of relevant lawful practice there can be proved. The route follows the country of education and professional history, not simply the passport held today.
The Austrian Authority Decides the Comparable Nursing Level
Austria compares the foreign programme against DGKP, Pflegefachassistenz or Pflegeassistenz. It examines duration, curriculum, clinical subjects, theory and practice hours and competencies. A university of applied sciences handles third-country DGKP nostrification, while provincial authorities handle PFA and PA. If important differences remain, the decision can require examinations, courses or clinical placements. This is a structured path to equivalence, not automatically a refusal.
Temporary Lower-Level Work Is Possible Only With a Decision
When a final recognition or nostrification decision prescribes compensatory measures, Austrian rules may permit limited work at the next lower level for up to two years: a DGKP applicant as PFA, a PFA applicant as PA, or a PA applicant under guidance and supervision. The written decision and Health Professions Register entry must support the work. Applicants should never start lower-level duties merely because an employer says the recognition application is pending.
Build the Work Plan Around the Final Legal Start Date
Collect detailed educational and professional evidence, confirm the competent authority, begin German and submit the recognition file. Use the written decision to seek a correctly classified offer, then coordinate register entry and immigration. Official register language levels are B1 for PA/PFA and B2 for DGKP.
