An extra shift, a weekend contract and freelance work can raise different questions. Check what your residence title authorises before adding side income to your relocation budget.

The short answer: check the permit before accepting the extra work

An employee Red-White-Red Card does not provide general permission to work for any number of employers. ABA — WORK in AUSTRIA describes it as tied to a particular employer. A second employment contract therefore needs a specific authorisation check; your manager’s approval or a low monthly wage is not enough. Minor self-employed activity is a different question, with its own conditions. Do not treat all three arrangements as interchangeable.

This guide was checked on 28 October 2026. It focuses on people holding an employee RWR Card, including nurses considering extra shifts. RWR Card Plus holders have broader labour-market access, while EU citizens and holders of other residence documents may fall under different rules. Start by reading the full name and conditions of your actual document, not by relying on the phrase “Austrian work visa”.

Is this overtime, a second employer or self-employment?

Identify who will employ and pay you. Extra hours arranged by your existing legal employer may be overtime within that employment. A weekend contract with another care home may instead create a separate employment relationship. Two workplaces with a similar name, common owner or shared recruitment agency are not necessarily the same legal employer. Ask for the employer’s full legal name and the proposed contract before agreeing a start date.

For example, a hospital nurse might be offered Saturday work through a staffing agency. The agency could be the legal employer even when the shift is in a familiar building. Record the organisation, duties, location, hours and payment arrangement. Those details help the competent authority distinguish an employment-permission issue from a roster question. An informal description such as “just helping out” does not establish the legal position.

Does a small or marginal job avoid the immigration rules?

Do not use the term geringfügig as a substitute for permission. It concerns an employment and social-insurance category; it does not establish that a particular residence document authorises the work. Ask the prospective employer and the AMS or competent residence authority what authorisation would be needed for the actual arrangement. State explicitly that you already have an employer-linked RWR Card and want additional work rather than a replacement job.

Keep a copy of the proposed contract and any written clarification. Do not start a paid trial shift while the answer is unresolved. Equally, do not assume that paying tax, registering for insurance or receiving a payslip will retrospectively settle the immigration question. These are different obligations. Build the household budget on confirmed income from authorised work, not on a second job you have only discussed verbally.

Can an RWR Card holder freelance on the side?

Section 20d(8) of the Austrian Aliens Employment Act permits subordinate self-employed activity for the relevant RWR Card and EU Blue Card holders where all legal requirements for that activity are satisfied. ABA describes this as self-employment only to a minor extent alongside the employed role. It is not a general permission to replace the main job with a full-time business or to describe an ordinary employment relationship as freelance.

Before accepting clients, describe the service, expected hours, income and relationship with the client to the relevant advisers. Establish whether trade registration, professional authorisation, insurance or other requirements apply. An online service for a customer abroad still deserves review if you perform it from Austria. Do not invent a universal permitted number of freelance hours or euros: the subordinate nature and the applicable requirements must be assessed for the real activity.

What changes if you hold an RWR Card Plus?

The Interior Ministry says the RWR Card Plus permits employed and self-employed activity without restriction to one employer. That removes an important employer-link restriction, but does not remove employment-law, tax, insurance or professional requirements. A second nursing role still needs to match your recognised qualification and current professional entitlement. A broader residence title is not an upgrade from PA to PFA or DGKP.

Check the document you actually hold before relying on that distinction. An intention to apply for the Plus card, or an assumption that you have worked long enough, is not the same as having the relevant status confirmed. If a change of employer is involved, use the current procedure for that situation; it is not identical to adding a side contract. Keep the immigration question separate from negotiations over pay and scheduling.

Your existing contract and total working time also matter

The Chamber of Labour explains that employees are generally entitled to enter another employment relationship, but the employer can object in specified cases, including incompatibility with working-time rules or detriment to the existing employment. Contractual reporting obligations and particular competition restrictions can also matter. That general employment-law position does not itself expand an employer-linked immigration permission. Both layers need to work for your arrangement.

The hours from multiple employment relationships are counted together for working-time limits. Give the advisers the combined roster, not two schedules considered separately. A late shift followed by an early shift at another workplace may also leave a rest-period problem. For nursing, ask which sector-specific working-time framework applies and have the total pattern checked. Do not assume a generic weekly maximum resolves every issue in a hospital or care setting.

Will the second payslip show the complete tax and insurance cost?

Government guidance warns that multiple employment relationships can lead to additional social-insurance contributions and income-tax payments. Each employer’s payroll result is not necessarily the final calculation for the combined income. Concurrent separately taxed employment can trigger a mandatory employee tax assessment, depending on the applicable conditions. Check the rules for the relevant tax year rather than carrying a threshold from an older online example into a new year.

Ask for an annual comparison showing the likely extra gross pay, contributions, tax and additional costs such as travel or childcare. Keep both payslip records and reserve money for a possible later bill. Freelance income can involve a different filing and insurance position again. A small gross side income may be less useful than expected once its actual costs and the extra time away from home are included.

A checklist before saying yes to the offer

Put six items in one file: your residence title, the proposed legal employer or client, the contract and duties, the combined hours, your existing contract’s relevant clauses, and the tax/insurance questions. Obtain the required authority clarification before fixing the first shift. If the second role is regulated, add the recognition decision and register evidence. This gives each adviser concrete facts instead of asking whether all “side jobs” are allowed.

The Move to Austria €99 Initial Assessment can help you organise an employment and relocation plan and identify which checks remain open. Bring both offers and your current documents. It does not issue work authorisation, approve a business or replace individual tax or legal advice. If you have already been asked to start unconfirmed work, clarify permission directly with the competent bodies before waiting for a general planning appointment.
