Understand rosters, breaks, daily and weekly rest, overtime records and why allowances depend on the applicable agreement.

Your roster is shaped by several rule layers

Nursing schedules can be governed by statutes, a collective agreement, works agreement and individual contract. Hospital and long-term-care settings may also have sector-specific rules. Ask which framework applies, the contracted weekly hours, roster cycle and whether handover, training and on-call time count as paid working time.

Breaks and rest protect safe practice

General Austrian guidance provides a 30-minute break when daily work exceeds six hours and an uninterrupted daily rest period of at least eleven hours, subject to lawful collective or sector exceptions with compensation. Weekly rest is generally 36 uninterrupted hours. Do not judge a roster from one number alone; check the applicable exception and replacement rest.

Overtime must be recorded and classified

Keep your own daily record of start, end, breaks, handovers, call-backs and requested overtime. Distinguish normal hours, additional part-time hours and overtime because the applicable payment or time-off rule may differ. Raise missing hours promptly: contracts and collective agreements can contain deadlines for claiming unpaid amounts.

Night and weekend allowances are not one national rate

Austria has no single nursing night-shift premium. Entitlement and amount can come from the collective agreement, employment contract or works agreement. Ask for the exact euro amount or percentage for nights, Sundays, holidays, hardship and on-call work and whether it is already included in the advertised gross estimate.

Compare offers using a real monthly roster

Request a sample roster and calculate base pay, contracted hours, expected nights, weekends, allowances and time off separately. A higher monthly estimate may simply assume more difficult shifts. Our offer review can expose missing assumptions and compare lawful roles, while Arbeiterkammer or a union should assess disputed working-time or pay claims.
