Learn how collective agreements, prior-service deadlines and verifiable employment records affect nursing pay classification.
Foreign experience can matter, but it is not automatic
Austria has no general statutory rule requiring every employer to credit all previous nursing service. The applicable collective agreement, employer rules and contract determine whether earlier work changes the pay group or step. Two nurses with the same foreign experience can therefore receive different classifications from different employers.
Identify the collective agreement and exact classification
Ask the employer to name the collective agreement, occupational group, pay step and credited service date in writing. Compare the offered role with the Austrian title you may legally use: PA, PFA or DGKP. Experience cannot justify a higher protected title before recognition and registration, even when it may influence salary within the lawful role.
Report prior service before the deadline
Some collective agreements set a deadline for declaring previous service. Tell the employer during contract preparation and ask which evidence and translation it needs. Missing a contractual deadline can reduce or eliminate credit. Do not wait until the first payslip to mention ten years of employment that the employer did not assess.
Use evidence that makes duties comparable
Provide employer name, exact dates, weekly hours, department, professional title and concrete clinical duties on verifiable letterhead. Add contracts, social-insurance records or payslips only where useful and lawful. A certificate saying only ‘worked as a nurse’ may be too vague to decide whether the activity was equal or similar under the agreement.
Check the written offer and first payslip
Before signing, request the gross base salary, credited years, allowances and special-payment rules. After starting, compare the contract, registration title and payslip classification and challenge discrepancies promptly through the employer, works council or Arbeiterkammer. Our document review can organise proof and questions but cannot determine the employer’s binding classification.
