Who Must Register and When
Anyone who takes up accommodation in an Austrian dwelling generally has to register a main or secondary residence within three days of moving in. Registration is completed only after you actually occupy the accommodation; a registration without a real residence can be treated as a punishable sham registration.
The Accommodation Provider Must Sign
For a paper registration, the person providing the accommodation must sign the Meldezettel. This may be the owner, the main tenant for a subtenant, or another person who genuinely provides the home; each person being registered needs a separate, fully completed form.
Where and How to Submit It
Submit the registration to the competent municipal office, municipal administration or, in Vienna, a Municipal District Office. It can be filed in person, by messenger or by post; fax and email are not accepted. The federal online service requires ID Austria or EU Login and is generally available only if you have previously been registered in Austria.
Documents, Cost and Confirmation
Foreign nationals need a travel document such as a passport, together with official records needed for the personal details on the form. The registration itself has no fee, and the authority provides written confirmation; postal applications can require original or certified documents, so check the local office before sending anything valuable.
Main Residence, Secondary Residence and Moving Again
Your main residence is the centre of your personal life; another Austrian address may be registered as a secondary residence. When registering a new main residence, the authority may also deregister or change the status of the former one. Residence data can affect other duties, so keep the confirmation and update your registration after another move.
