A practical route from a North Macedonian nursing diploma through nostrification, German B2 and registration to work and residence.

North Macedonian Qualifications Normally Require Nostrification

North Macedonia is outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland, so a nursing qualification completed there normally follows Austrian nostrification. European professional recognition is not available merely because the applicant later lives or works in an EU state. A narrow exception can apply if the same third-country qualification was already formally recognised in the EU, EEA or Switzerland and the nurse proves at least three years of relevant lawful practice there.

Match Your Training to the Correct Austrian Profession

Austria regulates three nursing levels: graduate nurse, Pflegefachassistenz and Pflegeassistenz. A North Macedonian title does not decide the Austrian level by its wording alone. The authority compares programme duration, subjects, theory, clinical hours and competencies. Universities of applied sciences handle graduate-nurse nostrification; the competent provincial government handles the assistant levels. Collect Detailed School and Employment Evidence Early

Prepare the diploma, transcript, full curriculum, separate theory and clinical-hour records, placement evidence, professional licence or status where applicable, good-standing evidence, employment certificates, passport and name-change records. References should state dates, weekly hours, wards and clinical duties. Austria may require originals, certified copies, German translations and legalisation. Ask your school and employers in North Macedonia for detailed records before relocating because missing clinical evidence can delay comparison.

The Decision May Require Compensatory Measures

Nostrification measures equivalence with the corresponding Austrian education. If important differences remain, the decision can prescribe examinations, courses or clinical placements. That is a defined route to equivalence, not necessarily a rejection. Limited work at a lower nursing level for up to two years may be possible while measures are completed, but only if the decision allows it and Health Professions Register conditions are met. Employer duties must stay within that authorised scope.

German B2 and Registration Control the Legal Start

The official Nursing in Austria portal lists German B2 for graduate-nurse registration. Entry in the Health Professions Register is mandatory before practising a registered nursing profession, including authorised temporary lower-level work. A general language course does not by itself prove every registration requirement. Build clinical German for medication, documentation, handover and patient consent while the qualification file is being assessed.

Nursing Is a 2026 Shortage Occupation, but Conditions Still Apply

Graduate nurses, Pflegefachassistenz and Pflegeassistenz appear on Austria's nationwide 2026 shortage list. A North Macedonian citizen with a binding Austrian offer may assess the Red-White-Red Card route for Skilled Workers in Shortage Occupations. It still requires qualifying training, lawful pay, sufficient points and the general residence conditions. The shortage list neither replaces professional authorisation nor guarantees a job or permit.

Coordinate the Residence File Before Starting Work

First residence applications are generally filed personally through the competent Austrian representation before entry and the decision is awaited abroad, subject to statutory exceptions. The Austrian provincial residence authority—not the embassy—decides. The current application fee is €218. If a Visa D is needed to collect the approved title, observe the notification deadline. Visa-free short travel is not work permission, and an in-country filing does not automatically extend a lawful short stay.

A Safe North Macedonia-to-Austria Sequence

First identify the likely Austrian nursing level and obtain complete education and practice records. Study German toward B2 while submitting nostrification. Use the written decision to target an employer and verify collective-agreement classification, salary, duties and a conditional start date. Then coordinate registration, the binding offer and residence application. Do not pay anyone for a guaranteed recognition or permit; only the competent authorities can issue those decisions.
