See who can obtain Spain's 24-month post-study job-search residence, when to file and why it does not itself allow work.

This permit is only for qualifying Spanish graduates

Spain's post-study residence for job search or a business project is not a general visa to enter Spain and look for work. It is for a third-country national who already held a long-duration study authorization in Spain, completed studies at an authorized Spanish higher-education institution and reached at least European Qualifications Framework level 6, corresponding to a university degree.

Apply around the expiry of student status

The application is filed electronically with form EX-26 and directed to the province of intended residence. The official window is the sixty calendar days before the study authorization expires, with filing also possible within ninety calendar days afterward, although late filing can trigger sanction proceedings. Prepare completion evidence, passport with the required validity, insurance and a declaration of sufficient means before the window opens.

The residence lasts 24 months and cannot be extended

The authorization permits residence in Spain for an unextendable period of twenty-four months to seek work suitable for the completed study level or start a business project. It is not renewed for another search period. The Ministry publishes a twenty-day decision period and positive administrative silence, but applicants must still monitor electronic notifications and obtain the formal evidence needed for later procedures.

It does not itself authorize employment

A crucial limitation is that the job-search authorization does not allow the graduate to work. Accompanying family members on the linked status are likewise not authorized to work under that permit. Once suitable employment is found or a business project is ready, the graduate must apply for the appropriate work authorization under the general immigration rules or Law 14/2013 before beginning the activity.

Plan the conversion before accepting an offer

Tell employers that residence for job search is not yet the work authorization, and identify whether the future route is an ordinary employee permit, EU Blue Card, national highly qualified permit or self-employment. Check whether the role matches the level of completed studies and whether professional recognition is needed. Request the TIE within one month after notification of the job-search authorization.
