Separate official costs from recruiter charges
Recognition fees, certified translations, legalisation, language tests, residence applications and travel can be genuine costs. An agency charge is different and should be itemised in a written agreement naming the legal company and exact service. Never accept one unexplained package price or a claim that cash paid to a recruiter is an official Austrian authority fee.
Verify recruiter and employer independently
Find the employer through its official career site and call a publicly listed number—not only the contact supplied in a message. Confirm the vacancy, recruiter relationship, Austrian title, worksite and person signing the offer. Check company identity and bank-account beneficiary before paying anything. A professional email design or copied hospital logo does not prove authorisation.
Read training and repayment clauses before signing
Employer-funded German, recognition, travel or housing may come with repayment conditions. Ask for the maximum amount, covered invoices, declining balance, repayment trigger, monthly deductions and what happens if recognition fails or the employer ends the job. Obtain independent advice on unclear clauses; do not rely on a spoken promise that repayment will never be enforced.
Recognise the strongest warning signs
Walk away from guaranteed recognition or visas, pressure to pay immediately, personal bank accounts, crypto or cash-only demands, requests for passport originals, fake interviews, salary without a collective-agreement basis, and contracts using DGKP before lawful authorisation. Austrian authorities—not recruiters—decide recognition, register entry and residence permits.
Use an ethical, document-first process
Austria’s health ministry has issued ethical international recruitment guidance based on the WHO Code. A safe process gives transparent information, a verifiable employer, understandable contracts and time for review. Our assessment can check route consistency and document readiness, but it never guarantees a public decision; report suspected fraud to the relevant platform, bank or authority promptly.
